The new adventure play tower will include a two-level treehouse, fitting into the natural setting at Queen’s Park. The play structure offers an exciting range of play opportunities for a diverse range of ages and abilities, including three types of slides, a vertical climber and a three-dimensional climbing cable structure. The large treehouse tower deck will include a transfer platform designed with enclosed steps and handrails, offering an inclusive approach to the play features.

It is anticipated that construction will start in early August 2021 and take approximately four weeks.

What are the specific new plans for the playground equipment? When does construction start?

CaptainFF asked almost 3 years ago

The proposals for the replacement play equipment in Queens Park are currently under review. Once a decision is made, details on the new play equipment will be posted for information. In our experience, play equipment can take up to 12 weeks to order, ship and install. Once this project is awarded, staff will work the successful proponent to minimize the gap between removal and replacement of the play equipment. At this time, this project is anticipated for completion in June/ July 2021.

I recommend a similar one to Mundy Park in Coquitlam. The best in the Lower Mainland but we could just walk over instead ;). Do the residents get to vote?

Thank you for your recommendation. Although it is not the city’s practice to engage the community in replacing a singular play feature within a playground, we welcome all suggestions.

Once the public tender process is complete, we will share the information on the selected replacement structure with park users and the broader community.

I hope the new play structure will involve elements of risk as this one did. It was wonderful to have a play structure built before play structures were built to be overly safe and boring. Our kids need to learn to manage risks, which can be really hard in an urban environment. Please also keep it for older kids! There are so few play areas for older kids in the city

Thank you for your input, we understand and value play elements that allow for ‘managed risks’ in our playgrounds. In addition, we will consider factors such as user age groups, play value, and diversifying the play experience relative to the surrounding play equipment.

Will the public be involved in the design / selection process? This is a very important playground, being one of, if not the biggest playground in the city.

The Parks & Recreation Department is replacing the play tower in Queen’s Park due to its age and condition. It is our intention to install a new play feature of equal or greater play value to that of the existing feature.  In selecting replacement features, staff consider factors such as user age groups, play value, and diversifying the play experience relative the surrounding play equipment.  We also need to balance these factors with the available budget for the supply and install of the replacement structure.   Although it is not the city’s practice to engage the community in replacing a singular play feature within a playground, we welcome any suggestions or factors that should be considered in our selection process.
